For over a century the villages of Mesabaja, Naranjala and La Yucala in Nilo have preserved the campesino way of life. Since 1954, the campesinos of Nilo have been threatened by the Tolemaida military base and more recently by mining on the Sumapaz river. Artist and Nilo community activist Milton S. Sanchez drew these maps of Nilo for the report: “Resistir en el territorio para proteger la vida campesina,” to show the devastating impact of militarization and extraction on the campesinos of Nilo.
