The Path Towards Justice

Jul 19, 2024 | News

Last July 8, we accompanied the Peace Community of San José de Apartadó in the village of La Unión at their annual commemoration of the massacre of 6 young leaders of the Peace Community 24 years ago.

The young men were mainly involved in organizing the return of displaced people from the village of La Unión before the massacre. One of the young men killed was Humberto Sepulveda. Below, the memorial of Humberto today stands in the Peace Community.

Not long after the massacre, which according to witnesses was coordinated by paramilitaries and the military, the villagers of La Unión fled back to the main town of San José de Apartadó.

Since then, the Peace Community of La Esperanza has been displaced and can only carry out necessary farming tasks and can care for their animals only with the help of international accompaniment.

The crime has still not been fully investigated, nor have the masterminds behind it been brought to justice.

On March 19, 2024, Peace Community members Nalleli Sepulveda and Edinson David were killed. Below, Nalleli stands in her kitchen in La Esperanza.

Nalleli and Edinson had been engaged in acts of non-violent resistance against the illegal construction of a road and were defiant in their fight to remain on their farm in the village of la Esperanza. Below, Peace Community members write protest signs which they would openly display, reading: Plant Forests, Sow Life.

Since then, the Peace Community of La Esperanza has been displaced. They can only carry out the most necessary farming tasks and provide care for their livestock only with the support of international accompaniment.

The crime against Nalleli and Edinson has still not been fully investigated, nor have the masterminds been brought to justice.

The Peace Community demands clarification and justice not only in these two cases of gross human rights violations, so that this cycle of violence and killing can be counteracted.

Among many other initiatives, the Peace Community is claiming justice before the Inter-American Court, where its case has been pending for many years. On July 8, 2024, a virtual audience was held in this regard after the commemoration ceremony, during which the Peace Community very clearly explained the consequences of the continuing impunity of human rights violations.

Nalleli, was killed 24 years later, like Humberto. She was his sister.
