Ex-Volunteers Return to the Peace Community

A group of former volunteers recently returned to Colombia, many for the first time in nearly a decade to visit the Peace Community they once accompanied. It was a journey of remembrance and reconnection, revisiting La Holandita and Mulatos for the commemoration of a massacre that took place ten years ago, on February 21.

This trip was deeply symbolic for those who had spent time living alongside the community. It was a chance to see old friends, share stories, and reaffirm bonds of solidarity that had never truly faded. Walking familiar paths, hearing familiar voices, and witnessing the continued resilience of the community brought a rush of memories—of early morning walks, shared laughter, and the ever-present tension of accompaniment work.

Yet, the weight of injustice remains. Twenty years after the massacre, accountability is still lacking. This lack of justice casts a long shadow, a painful reminder of the impunity that too often defines these crimes. The commemoration was not just about remembering those lost, but also about demanding what has yet to come: truth, recognition, and real justice.

FORPP accompanier Enrique Chimonja accompanied the delegation. You can find his reflections here.
